Mars Retrograde 2027: January 10 – April 1, From 10°26 Virgo Back to 20°56 Leo

The red planet Mars tracing a backward loop between the Virgo and Leo constellations — the January to April 2027 Mars retrograde

Mars is retrograde January 10 – April 1, 2027. It stations retrograde at 10°26 Virgo, backs into Leo on February 22, and stations direct at 20°56 Leo. It's the next major retrograde after Mercury turns direct on November 13 and Venus on November 14, 2026, and it's the one that touches drive, conflict, and anything you have to push to get started.

Coming from the autumn retrogrades? The October–November Mercury retrograde and the double retrograde end when Mercury turns direct on November 13 and Venus on November 14. That leaves under two months before Mars turns back.

When is Mars retrograde in 2027?

Mars turns retrograde on January 10, 2027 at 10°26 Virgo and stations direct on April 1, 2027 at 20°56 Leo. In between, it backs out of Virgo and into Leo on February 22. These dates come from NASA JPL Horizons ephemeris data.

  • November 26, 2026: Mars enters Virgo from Leo
  • January 10, 2027: Mars stations retrograde at 10°26 Virgo
  • February 22, 2027: Mars retrogrades out of Virgo, back into Leo
  • April 1, 2027: Mars stations direct at 20°56 Leo
  • May 15, 2027: Mars re-enters Virgo
  • July 16, 2027: Mars finally leaves Virgo for Libra

About the shadow. Mars backtracks over the stretch from 20°56 Leo to 10°26 Virgo, so that's the zone of the zodiac this retrograde re-works. Mars crosses it going forward between now and January 10, backward between January 10 and April 1, and forward again after that. It clears 10°26 Virgo for the last time sometime after it re-enters Virgo on May 15. The ephemeris data we publish from doesn't give the exact dates Mars enters and leaves that zone, so we're not printing shadow dates. You can rely on the station dates above.

Why this one runs through two signs

Most of the retrograde talk on this site is about Mercury, which goes back three or four times a year. Mars goes retrograde far less often, and it reviews something different: not communication but drive, anger, initiative, and the will to push. When Mars goes back, the energy you use to start things and stand your ground turns inward and gets re-worked.

This one also changes sign partway through. The first six weeks (January 10 – February 22) are in Virgo, the sign of method, work, health, and getting the details right. Here the review is practical: the process, the routine, the tool that keeps breaking. The last five weeks (February 22 – April 1) are in Leo, the sign of pride, creativity, visibility, and the self. Here the review gets personal: how you assert yourself, and what you're fighting for.

Two overlaps make the back half denser. Jupiter is also retrograde in Leo (from December 13, 2026 at 27°01 Leo until April 13, 2027 at 17°00 Leo), so from February 22 to April 1 both planets are retrograde in the same sign. And Mercury is retrograde February 9 – March 3, 2027, stationing at 5°59 Pisces and turning direct at 20°55 Aquarius. For those three weeks, communication and drive are both pointed backward. If you have to schedule something irreversible, that's the stretch to avoid most.

Mars retrograde doesn't take your drive away. It makes you check what you've been pushing for before you push again.

What to avoid January 10 – April 1

Starting a fight you expect to win quickly — Mars is the planet of conflict and initiative; retrograde, the traditional reading is that the first push meets resistance and the dispute drags on. Disputes started Jan 10 – Apr 1 tend to come back.
Launching anything competitive — A new venture, a campaign, a sales push against a rival — electional astrology wants Mars moving forward for a beginning that has to fight for its place.
Elective procedures and high-strain physical starts — Mars rules cuts, heat, and the body pushing hard. If the date is genuinely yours to choose, traditional practice moves it out of the retrograde. Never delay medical care for an astrological reason.
Treating a stalled plan as a failed one — A Mars retrograde slows drive; it doesn't cancel it. The thing that stalls in January is often the thing that works once Mars is direct again.

What it's good for

Finishing what you started since late November — Mars entered Virgo on November 26, 2026. Whatever you began then is exactly what the retrograde asks you to refine — not abandon.
Repairing systems, tools, and routines — Virgo is the sign of method and maintenance. The first half of this retrograde rewards fixing the process over forcing the result.
Revisiting an old dispute on calmer terms — Retrograde Mars brings back unresolved conflicts. Approached deliberately, that's a chance to settle them properly instead of re-fighting them.
Training with restraint — Rebuild form and consistency instead of chasing personal bests. Structure now, intensity after April 1.

This is the same “effort meets resistance” theme as the Mars square Saturn week in September, but stretched over almost three months instead of a few days. What worked then works now: discipline over force, and preparation over launching.

What Mars retrograde re-works for your sign

Using whole-sign houses (your sign as the 1st house), the retrograde starts in the house Virgo occupies for you and finishes, from February 22, in the house Leo occupies:

Aries · your 6th → 5th house: your ruler turns back in your house of work and health — a workload you took on too fast, or a training plan pushed past what your body agreed to, gets rebuilt. From Feb 22 it moves into romance and creative projects: an old flame or a shelved project asks for a second, slower attempt.
Taurus · your 5th → 4th house: a romance, a creative project, or something involving children stalls or needs re-doing. After Feb 22 the heat moves home — a renovation, a housemate dispute, or a family argument that was never finished. Fix the base; don't start a second project on top of it.
Gemini · your 4th → 3rd house: home and family first — a move, a repair, or a parent's situation needs a second pass. From Feb 22 it shifts to your daily mind and your siblings: sharp words come easily. With Mercury, your ruler, also retrograde Feb 9 – Mar 3, re-read before you send.
Cancer · your 3rd → 2nd house: arguments by text, a sibling friction, or a car and commute problem comes back to be dealt with properly. After Feb 22 it moves to your money: an impulse spend or a pay negotiation you rushed gets revisited. Hold big purchases until after April 1.
Leo · your 2nd → 1st house: money first — spending on drive and status, or an income push that ran ahead of the plan. Then from Feb 22 Mars backs into your own sign, with Jupiter retrograde there too: the review gets personal. Rework how you assert yourself rather than pushing harder.
Virgo · your 1st → 12th house: Mars stations in your own sign on Jan 10 — your energy, your temper, and the projects you started since late November are the ones under review. After Feb 22 it sinks into your 12th: rest is not optional, and old frustrations you buried surface to be released.
Libra · your 12th → 11th house: it begins out of sight, in your house of rest and what's hidden — tiredness, a background resentment, a behind-the-scenes effort that needs redoing. From Feb 22 it reaches your friends and groups: a team conflict or a goal you set with others gets re-negotiated.
Scorpio · your 11th → 10th house: a group, a network, or a long-term goal hits friction first. Then from Feb 22 Mars, your traditional ruler, backs into your career house — a fight with a boss or a career push that ran too early comes back. Revise the strategy; don't quit in the heat of it.
Sagittarius · your 10th → 9th house: career and public role are where the drive stalls — a promotion push, a public dispute, or a launch that needs re-timing. After Feb 22 it moves to travel, study, and belief: a course, a trip, or a legal matter needs a second look before you commit more to it.
Capricorn · your 9th → 8th house: a trip, an application, a legal or publishing matter — whatever you were pushing abroad or in study gets delayed and refined. From Feb 22 it moves to shared money: debt, a partner's finances, a tax or loan question. Don't sign new credit in this stretch.
Aquarius · your 8th → 7th house: joint finances, debt, and intimacy are where tension comes back up — a money fight or an old loan. After Feb 22 Mars reaches your partnership house directly: conflict with a partner or a business associate surfaces. Have the conversation calmly; this is the review, not the verdict.
Pisces · your 7th → 6th house: partnership first — Mars stations opposite your sign, so the friction comes through other people: a partner, a client, a rival. After Feb 22 it moves into work and health, and pushing through exhaustion stops working. Re-plan the routine instead of grinding it out.

This is the sun-sign version: real, but only one layer. Your full birth chart, meaning your rising sign, where your natal Mars sits, and whether you have planets near 10°26 Virgo or 20°56 Leo, decides how strongly this lands and in which part of your life.

How to plan around it

  • Before January 10: if something competitive has to start this winter, before January 10 beats after it. Mercury is direct from November 13, Venus from November 14, and Mars is still moving forward. Expect to refine it during the retrograde, though: Mars is already crossing the degrees it will retrace.
  • January 10 – February 22 (Virgo): fix the process. Repair, re-plan, and tidy the work you started since November 26.
  • February 9 – March 3: Mercury is retrograde too. This is the tightest stretch for signing, launching, or starting a dispute. See signing a contract during Mercury retrograde if you can't wait.
  • February 22 – April 1 (Leo): the review gets personal, and Jupiter is retrograde in Leo alongside it. Reconsider what you're fighting for before you fight harder.
  • After April 1: Mars is direct. Jupiter follows on April 13. Starts that need momentum get easier from here.

Astrology is a tool for timing and reflection, not fate. Mars retrograde doesn't causeconflict or failure. It's a traditional signal that this is a better time to refine and repair than to start and force. Use the dates to plan, not to panic.
